The GT3 RS is Porsche’s most track-focused 911 you can register for the road. Each generation is its own market, with prices that differ by two to four times, so we price every generation, and the Weissach package, separately.

Figures are US sales in US dollars from our sold-price data. Each version is priced separately; a median is shown only where there are at least 3 sales. Mileage is shown only where it was stated in miles. Sales wrongly filed under the 991.2 GT3 RS (GT2 RS and regular GT3 cars) are excluded, as are non-US-dollar sales and one Euro-market 997.1.

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS explained

The 996 GT3 RS started the water-cooled RS line but was never sold new in the US; the few US sales are imported cars. The 997.1 RS 3.6 was the first US-market GT3 RS, followed by the 997.2 RS 3.8 and the limited RS 4.0, all with manual gearboxes and the Mezger-type engine. The 991.1 RS moved to a 4.0-litre direct-injection engine with PDK only. The 991.2 RS added the optional Weissach package, and the 992 RS brought far more aggressive aerodynamics with Weissach again optional.

Rare versions and premiums

The 997 GT3 RS 4.0, limited to 600 cars according to Porsche, is the most valuable GT3 RS in our data: a $727,500 all-years median on 12 sales, +116% against the 997.2 3.8.

Weissach package: on the 991.2, cars with the package have a $248,950 median (10 sales) against $238,000 (33 sales) where the package isn’t stated. On the 992, $421,000 (25) against $425,000 (13). “Not stated” can hide Weissach cars, so read the gap as a minimum. Paint to Sample, carbon-ceramic brakes and the 992’s Manthey kit have too few tagged sales to price.

What to check when buying

  • Get the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity or window sticker to confirm Weissach, carbon-ceramic brakes and Paint to Sample.
  • 991.1 cars: check the NHTSA recall database and Porsche records for any engine replacement.
  • Carbon-ceramic rotor wear and the front-axle lift: check in a Porsche dealer pre-purchase inspection.
  • Ask a Porsche dealer for the engine over-rev report.
  • Ask about track use and any Clubsport cage or harness fittings.

Spotting fakes, clones and later-added parts

  • VIN format. A US-market VIN has 17 characters under federal rules (49 CFR Part 565). A Porsche starts WP0; the following characters carry model and body codes, position 10 the model year and position 11 the plant. It looks like WP0AC2A9_xS______. A GT3 with RS bodywork won’t carry the RS model code.
  • Certificate of Authenticity. Porsche can issue a certificate listing the car’s factory options as built. It is the definitive check for the Weissach package, carbon-ceramic brakes and Paint to Sample colours.
  • Option codes. The vehicle data label lists the option codes. Ask for a photo and match it to the certificate or window sticker.
  • Weissach added later. Magnesium wheels or carbon parts bought later don’t make a Weissach car. If the package isn’t on the certificate or window sticker, price it as a non-Weissach car.
  • Engine. Ask for engine documentation. Replacement engines can be legitimate, but they should be documented by Porsche.
