What to look for
Known issues
- Rust on steel-bodied cars. Corrosion is the biggest concern on steel 308s (from 1977): sills, lower doors, A-post base, arches, headlamp pods, valance, behind bumpers and around the windshield; blocked drain holes make it worse. - Fiberglass (Vetroresina) cars can hide a rotten frame. Early glassfibre cars don't rust on the panels but water can collect between body and tubular steel frame; inspect the structure from underneath. The gel coat can craze. Sources: Hagerty, Ferrari Owners' Club GB
- Cam belts and cam seals. Belts need replacement on a time basis (about every three years per the Ferrari Owners' Club guide); seals leak mostly on cars left sitting. Verify belt work with invoices. Sources: Classic & Sports Car, Hagerty, Ferrari Owners' Club GB
- Weber carburetor and ignition upkeep. Carbureted cars need more maintenance, especially when stored, as fuel residue gums the Webers; a misfire may mean a rebuild is due. Sources: Classic & Sports Car, Hagerty
- Fusebox and electrics. Most electrical faults trace to the original fusebox, whose riveted terminals build resistance until it melts; avoid cars with poorly modified or rewired electrics. Sources: Classic Motorsports
Inspection checklist
- Lift inspection of sills, A-posts, arches, headlamp pods, valance and floor
- On fiberglass cars, inspect the tubular frame where body meets chassis
- Invoices for belt changes in the last 3 years
- Warm oil pressure about 40-45 psi at idle and about 85 psi revved (Hagerty)
- Cold-start, then drive until warm; check 2nd gear selection
- Check for leaks at cam seals
- Watch temperature and confirm cooling fans run
- Test every switch, window, lights, pop-ups, A/C; open the fusebox
- Check clutch bite and slip
- Confirm tool roll, jack, book wallet and GTS roof cover
