What to look for
Known issues
- Bonded coolant pipes (Mezger engine). Coolant pipes glued into the engine's cast fittings can loosen and leak or let go; the fix is pinning or welding, which needs the engine out. Sources: Classic Motorsports, Regal Autosport
- IMS bearing does NOT apply. The general 996 mechanical-issues write-up (IMS bearing, RMS, bore scoring) refers to the M96 Carrera engines; the Turbo uses the Mezger-based engine, which specialists say doesn't share the IMS problem. Don't apply Carrera IMS warnings to the Turbo. Sources: Classic Motorsports, Published specifications
- Front radiators and A/C condenser. The low-hanging radiators and A/C condenser are easily damaged. Sources: Classic Motorsports
- Rear spoiler mechanism. The automatic rear spoiler mechanism can fail and is expensive to replace. Sources: Classic Motorsports
- Front differential. Front differentials can fail. Sources: Classic Motorsports
- Over-rev history. A good shop can read stored over-rev events from the ECU. Sources: Classic Motorsports
Inspection checklist
- Ask whether coolant pipes were pinned/welded; look for coolant traces on top of engine
- Inspect radiators and condensers; A/C must blow cold
- Watch the temperature gauge on test drive
- Boost gauge: quick, strong build
- Cycle the rear spoiler from the dash button
- Listen for front suspension knocks (ball joints, bushes)
- ECU scan for over-revs and stored faults
- Oil pressure about 1.5-2 bar at idle (Classic Motorsports)
- Damp-carpet check including front trunk; cabriolet roof well
