What to look for
Known issues
- Engine-out cam belt service. Cam-belt service needs the engine removed and is due about every 15,000 miles or roughly 3-5 years (sources differ); lapsed service is the biggest cost risk. Sources: Hagerty, Classic Motorsports, Classic & Sports Car
- Pre-1987/88 water-pump and oil-pump chain. Earlier cars should have the later water/oil pump chain update retrofitted at engine-out service; water pumps on pre-1989 cars could fail early. Sources: Hagerty, Classic Car Passion
- Single-nut wheels and old TRX tires. The original single-nut (center-lock) wheels must have good splines and correct torque; low-mile cars often sit on dried-out, expensive metric TRX tires. Sources: Hagerty
- Electrics, hatches and cabin wear. Test A/C, speedometer, headlight motors, console buttons and hatch-release cables; dash and switchgear (Fiat-sourced) age poorly. Sources: Classic Motorsports, Classic Car Passion
- US recalls. NHTSA lists recalls for the passive-restraint seat belts (1987-1991 model years) and the upper steering-column locknut (1990-1991); confirm completion by VIN. Sources: NHTSA
- Gray-market Euro conversions. Euro-spec cars imported and converted outside the dealer network can be a legal and repair problem; check conversion paperwork. Sources: Hagerty
Inspection checklist
- Records of last engine-out belt service (date and mileage)
- Evidence of the water/oil-pump chain update on early cars
- Inspect wheel splines and torque; check tire date codes
- Cold start, idle and warm-up behavior
- Gearbox: 2nd may be stiff cold; should free up warm
- Clutch condition and when last replaced
- Test all switches, A/C, headlight motors, hatch releases
- Check VIN recall status
- Verify US-spec vs converted Euro car
